Scouts Australia provides fun youth development activities to help youth grow through adventure. It’s a place where young people make new friends, learn through adventures and gain new skills. Scouts (members) can participate in award schemes, a journey which covers dozens of topics and hundreds of badges to cater to young people eager to learn and explore.
Scouts traditionally carry and track their journey through a physical, and often lost, logbook. Scouts Australia identified this as a setback as losing or forgetting the logbook created a negative impact on their experience.
Scouts Australia wanted to create a digital tool where Scouts can keep record of their activities and apply, receive and collect badges of achievement. A digital tool would help alleviate the need of Scouts carrying a physical logbook. Young people aged 11-14 years old need to be able to access the tool and it must align with the Scouts Australia Award Scheme.
A mobile application design was created for Scouts to conveniently record activities and keep track of their achievements and badges. An experience was designed that motivates Scouts to keep on track in completing tasks with the incorporation of gamification and journey visualisation. The app is a convenient way of recording their journey without a traditional record book. This helps Scouts achieve better results by encouraging and motivating them to achieve more badges towards their Scout’s Medallion.
